Local author Cindy Callaghan to “virtually” meet Club,

provide sneak peek of next novel

Kensington, MD—April 18, 2013—Tomorrow Kensington’s Holy Redeemer School’s “Cooks and Books Club” will get a special surprise treat:  A visit from Cindy Callaghan, local author of the book they recently read, JUST ADD MAGIC.  Callaghan, published by Simon & Schuster, will  join the club virtually to deliver a dramatic reading from the novel, and a presentation including a video sneak peek of her next book LOST IN LONDON, followed by a real-time question and answer session.

The 5th grade girls in Holy Redeemer School’s “Cooks and Books Club,” which is led by teacher Michelle Ardillo, read JUST ADD MAGIC over Spring break. JUST ADD MAGIC was an ideal book selection for this particular club, as it is about a group of girls, not unlike the Cooks and Books members, who create a secret cooking club.  In fact, when the Club members returned to school in April, they made “Black and White Super Swirleys,” just one of the many recipes shared at the end of the story.  In addition, the girls made their very own “recipedias,” as described in the book.

“This Club is extraordinary in that it transforms words on a page into an interactive and fun experience,” said Cindy Callaghan, author of JUST ADD MAGIC and the upcoming LOST IN LONDON and LUCKY ME (all from Simon & Schuster’s Aladdin M!x).  “Teachers like Michelle Ardillo are remarkable because their creativity and passion take reading to the next level for their students.  I love that she plans to surprise her group with my virtual visit!”

Tomorrow the JUST ADD MAGIC fun will continue as the Club undertakes a project found on Callaghan’s website and couples it with some of the delicious foods created by the characters in the book.

The short story sequel to JUST ADD MAGIC, which is called JUST ADD A FAMOUS TV CHEF, is available for free download at www.cindycallaghan.com.  Also on the site is information about Callaghan, her books, and school visits.

ABOUT JUST ADD MAGIC:  When Kelly Quinn and her two BFFs discover a dusty old cookbook while cleaning out her attic, the girls decide to try a few of the mysterious recipes inside.  But the ancient book bears an eerie warning, and it doesn’t take long for the girls to realize that their dishes are linked to strange occurrences.  The Keep ‘Em Quiet Cobbler actually silences Kelly’s pesky little brother and the Hexberry Tarta brings an annoying curse to mean girl Charlotte Barney.  And there’s the Love Bug Juice, which seems to have quite the effect on those cute Rusamano boys…

Could these recipes really be magical? Who wrote them and where did they come from.  And most importantly, what kind of trouble are the girls stirring up for themselves? Things are about to get just a little too hot in Kelly Quinn’s kitchen.
